Once upon a time at a community college far, far away…
In the spring of 2009, Scott Albright, an instructor of diesel mechanics dissatisfied with his classroom pedagogy assembled a team including Fred Marks, an instructor of English and auto mechanics, and Jane Purinton, an instructor of business and office administration. Funded by the Faculty Inquiry Network, this team worked together on the project for two years.
The results are in. With the original intent of just incorporating basic skills instruction into the program, they finished with changes to pedagogy that resulted in outcomes that were nothing short of miraculous.
